Importance of Tooth Structure Preservation in Doing Dental Veneers

Hi, I’m Dr Bishoy, one of the principal dentists here from Delight Dental Spa at Mascot in NSW.

Last Monday, I met a new patient, Sandra, who lives locally in Eastlakes. She wanted to talk about improving her smile and getting some veneers. During our conversation, she mentioned, “I’ve been seeing on TikTok this cosmetic dentist that is shaving all these teeth off, they look pretty scary. Just the idea of removing that much teeth freaks me out, and I am really concerned about that. Are you shaving that much teeth before having my veneers?”

I found it such an interesting comment, and her concern is a very valid one. So I decided to make a video sharing with you the Importance of Tooth Structure Preservation in Doing Dental Veneers, and our philosophy here at Delight Dental Spa.

So, what is the right amount of natural tooth we need to remove during the dental veneers procedure? You might’ve come across articles or videos onlines where people have traveled overseas for dental procedures, often resulting in excessive tooth removal, shaving their teeth down to tiny stumps. Here’s the thing, it’s irreversible. Once your tooth is gone, it’s gone for good.

That’s why, when it comes to porcelain veneers, our approach is always as conservative as possible. There are times when we remove less than 0.5 millimetres from certain areas of your tooth, which means the gaps between your teeth should be almost unnoticeable.

The secret to our method lies in meticulous treatment planning. We don’t just start trimming. We first do a smile design and trial, planning exactly where the veneer will sit on your tooth. This way, if the veneer is set to make your tooth thicker by, let’s say, 0.5 millimeters, and the veneer itself is one millimeter thick, we only need to remove 0.5 millimeters of your natural tooth, not a whole millimeter.

Our main goal is not to overly trim your teeth. We make sure we are able to achieve the desired effect by slightly thickening the teeth instead. This delicate process is guided and precise to give minimal natural tooth reduction.

So the final design dictates where we need to trim. It’s a targeted, efficient approach that makes only necessary adjustments. We also use robust materials that can be crafted extremely thin yet maintain their strength which means less natural tooth needs to be trimmed away.

It all boils down to the quality of our ceramics and the craftsmanship involved. This combination allows us to create super thin, sturdy veneers.

Here at Delight Dental Spa, our ultimate goal is to enhance your smile while preserving as much of your natural tooth as possible. That’s the power of meticulous design and masterful craftsmanship.

So I hope you now understand that you don’t need to shave your teeth down into little stumps to have porcelain veneers.
