Will My Teeth Get More Crowded and Crooked Over Time?

The other night, I was chatting with my older sister about her teeth developing crowding. She asked me, “My teeth didn’t used to be this crooked before… Why are they getting more crowded over time?” It’s a question many of our adult patients ask.

So I thought I would make this short video to help you understand why teeth get more crowded and crooked over time.

It’s an interesting fact that as we age, our teeth often become more crowded, particularly in the lower front region of our mouth. This happens because our teeth slowly move forward over time, leading to some overlap.

Think back to the time when you might have had braces and forgot to wear your retainers. Remember how your teeth started to crowd together again, or your bite started to change? That’s a classic example of how our teeth are constantly moving.

This is one of the reasons why, here at Delight Dental Spa, we emphasise the importance of retainers after any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign. We want you to retain that beautiful smile you’ve worked hard to achieve.

There are some downsides to teeth shifting over time. As they become more crowded, they’re harder to clean and floss. This overlap also makes them more prone to wear and tear. Our teeth are designed to align in a specific way, and if they overlap, it creates an imbalance that can lead to uneven wearing, making them more prone to chipping and changing shape. In some cases, teeth crowding can even cause imbalances in your jaw joints, leading to discomfort or clicking.

So, it’s not just about looks. The alignment of our teeth has significant functions and implications too. Many of our patients opt for teeth straightening to clean their teeth more effectively and to reduce the risk of wear. When teeth are crooked and touch unevenly, they start to wear down at different rates, which alters their shape.

In extreme situations, this can even lead to the need for greater intervention. Early-stage minor wear might be resolved with teeth straightening as a preventative measure. But if we delay, the changes to the shape of the teeth might be so severe that it would still be necessary to correct the alignment before fixing the wear and tear. If left unattended for long, teeth might become too worn and weak to repair or they might need treatment with more drastic procedures. This situation is more common among those who grind their teeth and also have teeth crowding.

So, let’s remember that dental health is not just about a bright smile but also about maintaining the right structural and functional integrity of your teeth.
